- Single padfoot drum roller – best for cohesive soils, clay, landfill waste. The pads chew into the material.
- Vibratory roller (smooth drum) – for granular materials, base layers, gravel.
- Asphalt compactor roller – usually a tandem or pneumatic‑tire roller. Different weight and vibration settings.
- Telescopic light tower – not a compactor, but if you work at night (many job sites do), you’ll need one. Don’t forget to budget for it separately.
I once bought a vibratory roller for a clay compaction job because it was on sale. It took three extra passes to meet density specs. Wasted time = wasted money. Now I always get the application in writing from the operations team before I even look at quotes.

Vendor A’s price excluded shipping ($1,800), no on‑site setup training ($900 extra), and spare parts had to be shipped from a warehouse 500 miles away (3‑day lead time). After one year, the total cost was $47,200. Vendor B was $45,000 all‑in, with a local parts depot and free training. I should have calculated TCO first. Actually, I should have – but I didn’t. Now I do.
The checklist I follow:

“$3,000 cheaper upfront” doesn’t mean anything if it costs you $5,000 more over two years. Total cost of ownership (TCO) is the only number that matters.
Step 3: Verify Dealer Support and Parts Availability
We didn’t have a formal dealer evaluation process. Cost us when a rental machine broke down on a Friday afternoon. The nearest dealer for that brand was 4 hours away, and they didn’t have the filter in stock. We lost a weekend of production.
Now I ask each dealer three questions:
- How many service trucks do you have within 50 miles of our site?
- What percentage of parts for the model I’m buying do you stock locally?
- What’s your typical response time for a breakdown?
If they can’t answer clearly, or they hedge? I walk. There’s something satisfying about getting a straight answer – “We stock 95% of wear parts, and we’ll have a technician there within 4 hours” – that’s the kind of supplier you want. Not just the lowest bid.
Step 4: Check Specifications Carefully (Don’t Assume “Same Spec”)
I assumed that two vibratory rollers with “12‑ton operating weight” would perform the same. Didn’t verify. Turned out one had a drum width of 2.1 m and the other 2.0 m. The wider one covered more area per pass, but the narrower one had a higher centrifugal force. Different machines for different jobs.
Learned never to assume specifications are interchangeable after a project manager complained that the roller we bought couldn’t achieve the required compaction depth. The spec sheet said “vibratory,” but the frequency range was too low for the material. I now request a detailed datasheet and check three things: drum width, static linear load, and centrifugal force range. If the vendor doesn’t provide it, I move on.
Step 5: Don’t Forget the Extras – Light Towers and Safety
This is the step most people skip. You’re focused on the roller compactor, but the job site also needs telescopic light towers for night shifts. If you buy them separately from a different vendor, you lose volume leverage and add administrative overhead.
I now ask: “Can you bundle a telescopic light tower with the roller compactor and give me a single invoice?” Often they can – and it saves us about 8% compared to buying separately. Plus, one warranty contact, one delivery date to track. The small stuff adds up.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Ignoring operator training – A new roller with a new operator costs 20% lower productivity for the first month. Include training in your TCO.
- Only looking at engine power – Compaction efficiency is about drum weight, vibration frequency, and amplitude. Engine HP matters less than you think.
- Not planning for future resale – Some brands (like Epiroc) hold value better because of parts availability and reputation. Don’t plan to keep it forever; plan to sell it in 5 years.
- Forgetting about liability – If you’re buying a telescopic light tower, check the mast stability and wind rating. In 2023, we had a tower tip over because it wasn’t rated for the wind on our site. Another lesson learned the hard way.
