Dimension 1: Hammer Efficiency & Tool Selection
The Epiroc D65: It comes standard with a high-performance hydraulic hammer (like the HB series) and a point-attack pick system for the face. What Should You Choose?
I don’t believe in “the best” drill rig. I believe in the right one for your operation.
- Choose the Epiroc D65 if: You’re in a medium-to-high production mining environment (non-extreme rock), you have modern operators and mechanics who can leverage the intelligent controls, and you need fast parts support. It’s the better bet for the majority of operations—maybe 75% of them.
- Look at alternatives if: You’re drilling primarily in extremely abrasive hard rock (where tool life favors chisel bits), you have a very tight budget and can afford longer downtime, or your crew isn’t comfortable with advanced electronic control systems.
I've seen too many mines buy the wrong rig because the price was right. That “bargain” rig cost one operator $22,000 in unplanned downtime during its first year. The Epiroc D65 isn’t perfect—no rig is. But for the majority of modern mining and quarrying applications, I’d recommend it. Just make sure your rock isn’t the 20% exception.
