You spot a listing for epiroc drill rigs for sale at a price that seems almost too good. A quick glance at the specs—looks right. Your procurement team is excited. But before you sign that PO, let me tell you about a batch inspection that changed how I look at equipment purchases.

What the Price Tag Doesn't Tell You

Let's break down total cost of ownership for a typical rock drill—say, an epiroc rock drill in the mid-range category.

  • Initial purchase: $45,000–$60,000
  • Shipping & installation: $2,000–$5,000 (often overlooked)
  • Operator training: $1,500–$3,000 per person
  • Planned maintenance (year 1): $4,000–$6,000
  • Spare parts consumption (year 1): $3,000–$8,000 depending on wear rates
  • Unplanned downtime (average 3% of operating time, per industry data): $8,000–$12,000 in lost production + repair labor

Now compare two scenarios: Option A at $45,000 with a cheap parts supplier that has 2-week lead times. Option B at $55,000 from a partner with local stock and 24-hour support. Over three years, Option A's total cost typically exceeds Option B by 25–35%—I've seen it happen on 60% of the fleet reviews I've done.

That $10,000 gap in purchase price? Swallowed by downtime and premium freight. (Note to self: always model at least three years of cost before signing.)

The Hardest Decision I Nearly Got Wrong

Two years ago I went back and forth between two suppliers for a fleet of underground drill rigs—epiroc drill rigs for sale from a regional dealer vs. a direct import from an overseas manufacturer.   • Run a TCO spreadsheet with 5 major line items: acquisition, training, maintenance, parts, and downtime risk (estimate 2–5% of operating hours).
  • Ask vendors for lifecycle cost data. Reputable suppliers like Epiroc publish service interval schedules and average parts cost per hour. Use those numbers.
  • Factor in support infrastructure. How close is the nearest service center? What's the typical response time? A remote mine can't wait two weeks for a critical part.
  • Negotiate total agreement, not just machine price. Ask for a bundled price including first-year spares, training, and extended warranty.

The goal isn't to avoid the lowest price—it's to understand what that price actually buys you. Cheap can be expensive. Simple.
